Importance of Conductive Edge Sealer
The application of conductive edge sealer is a key step in preventing premature failure of your pneumatic de-icers as well as costly damage to internal components. The surface materials used in most Collins Aerospace Goodrich® pneumatic de-icers are conductive, but they require the presence of the correct conductive edge sealer for proper static dissipation by completing the path of least resistance to the airframe. Lack of properly maintained conductive edge sealer is the main cause of pinhole damage, which leads to ingress of water into your de-icing system.
What edge sealer do I use?
The correct edge sealer depends on the color and surface ply material of your de-icer as shown in the table below. The material type can be found on the laser brand of each de-icer, which is typically found on the lower inboard edge. Refer to Installation Manual 30-10-31 for complete instructions.
Application Tips
The application will be more successful with two people, allowing one person to apply smoothly with a clean brush while the second pulls the tape immediately. Attaching ends of the tape to a cardboard cylinder (such as that shipped with the de-icer) and rolling will assist in a cleaner removal. Always pour and mix edge sealer in a clean secondary container, and if using two-part kits, mix in small batches due to rapid cure time.
Furthermore, visual inspection of conductive edge sealer should be part of your regular de-ice system checks to allow for refurbishment, as needed.
